Following a draw against Tyson Fury and victory over Dominic Breazeale, Wilder is back in the ring with the Cuban, defending not only his title but also a 42-fight unbeaten record.

Wilder is one of the most dynamic and fan-friendly fighters in the world. Even though his style sometimes lacks polish, you cannot argue with his results. He has floored every opponent he’s faced in 45 professional fights, and no one has ever officially beaten him (44-0-1, 43 KOs).

There is no fighter in the world whose presence makes a more sincere promise of action. That said, Ortiz is a legitimate threat to dethrone Wilder, which was evidenced by his near stoppage win in the seventh round of their first fight. That first meeting was one of the best fights of 2018. Fans can only hope they are treated to another war.

In their first bout back in March 2018, Ortiz came achingly close to stopping Wilder in a furious seventh round at the Barclay’s Center in New York. The big Cuban was unable to close the deal, and Wilder bounced back by knocking out Ortiz with a vicious uppercut in the 10th frame.

Wilder must be confident he has Ortiz, a top-10 heavyweight, all figured out, because he’s risking losing his WBC world title three months before a megafight with Fury, considered by many to be the division’s lineal champion. A loss would greatly dampen the enthusiasm for that bout and might force promoters to reschedule it so Wilder can try to get his belt back.

Ortiz, 40, should be laser-focused for this fight. It likely represents his last chance to make history by becoming the first Cuban to win a heavyweight world title.

Most will be watching to see if Ortiz can recreate the magic and finish the job, or perhaps Wilder will make even quicker work of the aging Cuban than he did in 2018 when he rallied to score a 10th-round KO win.

The winner of the Wilder vs Ortiz rematch will put themselves in prime position to face the winner of Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz Jnr, which is another highly-anticipated rematch that will take place on December 7 in Saudi Arabia.
